Be The Bigger Person | Social Media
I love social media. I love being able to see pictures of my grand kids and nieces and nephews. First day of school photos, dance photos, accomplishments, etc.. I love those posts, they lift my spirit!
I enjoy seeing funny posts from my friends and updates on their lives. I like to send out birthday messages to people I know. When I have a free moment I like to go on Facebook and see what’s going on in the lives of people I love. And I love, love, love, the positive, upbeat things that are shared with me on my Facebook page.
But there's things I DO NOT like about social media; rants. The angry political or religious rhetoric that is really just a blame-game. Like folks saying unkind, accusatory things! The comments can get really nasty…and I wonder how people think this kind of banter is effective? I wonder if one mind has been changed due to insults. I doubt it very much.
It’s not that I discourage debate and free speech, nooooo, that's what makes living in our country quite exceptional. But I do discourage insults and put downs and childish playground behavior.
We don’t have to all agree but let’s be civil and respectful. I know it’s hard when you passionately believe in something that others do not, but my encouragement today is to be the bigger person if ever you find yourself in the middle of a conversation like that. Don’t participate if it starts to get ugly. You’re not a coward and you’re not giving up – you’re choosing to model respect. That’s how I see it.
I hope you’ll join me on the airwaves tonight because I can tell you this – my show is meant to be a place of peace, not a place of division. I like to air songs and stories of love and hope so you can tune in and feel comfortable.
Let the noise of the day slip away and let me soothe off the rough edges of all the debate and busyness in your life. Call me if you have something specific you’d like to hear at 1-888-633-5452.
