Vernal Equinox is just days away, but it will take several more weeks before my flower beds, boxes, and potted posies are in full bloom…

Oliver | March Book Club

We love the furry members of our families! There is nothing quite like the absolutely unconditional love and devotion they provide, and in doing so, help to calm, to comfort, and complete us, making us better humans in the process.

Imagine, for just a second, if one of your fur babies were stolen… That’s what happened to Steven J. Carino, on Valentine’s Day 2019. Steven, a professional driver, had been in the car for many many hours that day. Oliver wasn’t normally with him on his trips, but it was Valentine’s after all, and Steven felt bad about leaving him at home on such a long work day. So he’d asked his client if she would mind his little doggo tagging (wagging) along. She didn’t.

His client safely transported to her destination and his day coming to a close, Steven made a stop before he got home. He let Oliver out to do his business, then put him back in the SUV and made a quick run into the store he’d parked in front of to make a quick purchase. When he came back out, Oliver was gone.

To say he was devastated to find Oliver missing wouldn’t begin to describe his emotions. But not to worry, this story has a happy ending. A wonderful ending. Actually, it has a beautiful “beginning” due to the unbelievable outpouring of concern and assistance in reuniting Steven with his Oliver.

You don’t have to be a dog-lover or animal nut like me to enjoy this book. MUSIC | A new movie by Sia

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Sia made her directorial debut this year with the musical drama film MUSIC.

Maybe you know her for some of her collaborations, like "Titanium" with David Guetta, "Diamonds" with Rihanna, or "Wild Ones" with Flo Rida... Maybe it's for her mega-hit "Chandelier", or her beloved Christmas album, "Everyday is Christmas."  Whatever you knew her for before, you’ll know her now as the genius behind MUSIC.

Sia not only wrote the screen play, did the casting, and directed the film, she also wrote and recorded the entire musical track. The movie stars Golden Globe-winning Kate Hudson as Zu, and Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom, Jr. as Ebo (who was recently on my podcast with me), and a young woman that Sia has worked with since she was a small child, Maddie Ziegler - the dancer in her videos - who now stars as the titular character, Music, a young girl on the autistic spectrum.

MUSIC is being described as “a powerful, original, and celebratory artistic statement.” It’s a story about the ability we all have to re-invent ourselves in improved forms, it’s about family in all its (sometimes painful) glory, it’s about community, and it’s about music.

”Together" is the lead single, and has been called “one of the best original songs within this year’s Oscar eligibility period..." It came out in May, followed by "Courage To Change" that was released in September. Excitingly, there will be two separate albums available, one with Sia performing the 10 songs she wrote for the movie - available now - and another at a later date with cast members lending their voices to her music. Make sure you add both to your listening library!

MUSIC, the movie, was released in select IMAX theaters for one night only, on February 10th, followed by an OnDemand release February 12th.

It's rated PG, so it's perfect for a gal-pal, honey-bunch, or family-night movie-watching experience (with a big bowl of popcorn!)

Duncan Laurence: Arcade

Who is Duncan Lawrence? Get used to hearing his name. We’re swooning over his music!

Duncan is a a Dutch singer-songwriter who won the Eurovision Song Contest competition in 2019. Since then, this once small-town boy has been traveling the globe, sharing his story and his musical talents to wild enthusiasm.

He’s recently released his first full studio album, Small Town Boy,  and with it, the centerpiece single, Arcade, (the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest winner) of which this has been said: “Therein, driving percussion and rousing strings send the “small town boy in a big arcade” reeling through love lost.”

Snowballs

These lovely powdered sugar-coated little morsels were a staple at every organized event I attended whilst growing up.

Called by various monikers, Mexican Wedding Cakes, Russian Tea Cakes, Polvorones, Viennese Sugar Balls… light crumbly butter cookies, that use no eggs or granulated sugar, were served at wedding and baby showers, receptions, Girl Scout meetings, Mother’s Tea… always present, always appreciated, always delicious!

And yet, they’re one of those things, like Divinity candy, I always counted on someone else to make. As time went on, I saw less and less of them on the treat table until these pecan pleasantries completely disappeared from my radar - and then my sis made a pile of them this year!

Oh what memories came flooding back! My best friends wedding shower that took place way too soon following our high school graduation, my Rainbow Girls days and the army of women that baked and fussed over us, and my grandmother’s nut mill (4 spring-mounted blades - pour the nuts into the jar, screw on the lid, and pump pump pump the spring top to chop, chop, chop the nuts inside!)

You may have snow in your neck of the woods, but in the Pacific Northwest ours is more of the liquid variety, so my sister packing Snowballs (and a snowman - cuz that’s how she rolls!) might be the only accumulation of white stuff around here. Sadly, they melted off the plate faster than anything I’ve ever witnessed out-of-doors!

Here’s the memory-laden recipe, make up a batch for a tasty January treat.

Ingredients:

• 1 cup butter, softened

• 1/2 cup powdered sugar

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 cup chopped pecans

• 1 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

2. Chop pecans (a mini food processor comes in very handy) into very small pieces - (resembling crushed graham cracker.)

3. in small bowl, combine flour, chopped pecans, and salt, mix until combined.

4. in large bowl, cream the softened butter, with 1/2 cup powdered sugar and vanilla. Add the flour and pecan mixture to the butter mixture a little at a time. dough will be dry and crumbly.

5. Pinch dough together to form balls about 1 Tablespoon in diameter, and place on ungreased cookie sheet.

6. Bake at 350 degrees for about 12-15 minutes. Do not overbake!

7. Roll in powdered sugar while warm, and once again when fully cooled.

8. Store in airtight container up to 1 week, or lob a few towards friends and neighbors in a mock snowball fight!

Christmas Craft | Spiced Candle in a Jar

My granddaughter, Nadia, is the source of inspiration for this crafty blog post! Her mama, Riely, is an incredible talented maker, and a hands-on kinda mom who’s been doing a terrific job of coming up with interesting and fun home-school activities that reinforce curricula.

Here’s a lovely little project they completed recently that Nadia shared with me. I’m hoping to find a sample of her efforts under my tree on Christmas morning, and think it’s a terrific activity for adults and big kids alike!

It’s super simple, yet oh-so-elegant, and a wonderful way to fill a home with beauty, light, delightful scents, and love - so much goodness in a little canning jar!

(Candle-making kits, like the one shown, can be found in craft-stores and on-line.)

Supplies:

• soy-based candle wax

• a melting vessel, stir stick

• essential oils

• aromatic herbal tea of your choice
  (like Bigelow Tea - one of my 12 Stocking of Christmas Sweepstakes prizes!)

• small jelly-sized canning jars with lids

• candle wick & wick tool (a pencil or cooking skewer also works)

• twine or ribbon for decoration

Directions:

1. Assemble your supplies

2. Put down newspaper or craft paper to protect your work space.

3. Follow package directions to melt the candle wax (a tried and true family method is placing the wax in an old tin can, and placing the can in a pan of boiling water - don’t let the water come up and over the tin can.)

4. Scoop a few teaspoons of aromatic herbal tea into the melted wax.

5. Add a few drops of essential oils to the mix - more for lighter scents, less for heavier. Stir well.

6. Attach a measure of candle wick to your wick tool, (or tie it to a pencil or wooden cooking skewer.) Hanging length should match the height of the jar you are using.

7. Pour wax into little canning jars, suspend the wick in the center of each, resting the wick tool, pencil or skewer across the top of the jar.

8. Allow to set.

9. Release the wick from the tool (pencil/skewer,) and trim to about 1/2 inch above the top of the candle.

10. Place the lid on the candle, tie a piece of ribbon or string around the jar and label as you wish.

Miracle Creek Christmas | December Book Club

Every time I crack the cover on a new book, it’s like giving myself a gift. I love to pass that gift on to you, my book club readers, and this December, this magical season, I have a delightful story to share, Miracle Creek Christmas, by Krista Jensen.

I was immediately drawn to the title, thinking how appropriate it would be for this time of year, but even more delightful was discovering the story is set in the Wenatchee Valley of Washington State! That’s a day trip from my home outside of Seattle, and there is no more picturesque place or better setting for a winter romance as far as I’m concerned.

The theatrical little Bavarian town of Leavenworth is exactly as described in the book; simply a sight to behold, and a place I love to take my family and friends visiting from far away places! The author does a fabulous job of describing the area, and I felt myself grinning every time a little burg, like Cashmere, was mentioned. If you’ve never been to these places, you’ll feel like you have after you’ve read about them here.

But setting aside, it’s the characters that will pull you in. Riley Madigan is a twenty-something city girl trying to outrun heartache. She leaves the city life behind to become a high school art teacher in the remote little town of Miracle Creek. Expecting to find solitude in such a place, she’s not prepared when she meets Mark Rivers on the ‘off-the-beaten path.’ Mark is working to rebuild his life after the devastation of losing his best friend and fire-fighting partner in a wildfire a year earlier, in which he suffered severe burns himself. He’s trying to come to terms with his altered appearance and his altered life.

Each carry heartache and injury, guarding themselves against any additional sorrows. So “just friends” it will have to be, despite those inconvenient feelings they keep trying to deny (themselves as well as others.) Well-meaning family members, and not-so-well-meaning community characters, had me fearful these two might not ever come to their senses, but - spoiler alert - they finally do!

Love blossoms in the middle of winter at Miracle Creek, and I know you’ll enjoy it as much as I did, perhaps curled up on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate, memories of when you last made a snow-angel in the back of your mind, while the lights on the tree twinkle in the corner…

Francesca Battistelli - This Christmas

This Christmas, a new 14-track collection, with a mix of originals and Christmas classics is the second Christmas album for Grammy® Award-winning artist, Francesca Battistelli. It features a spine-tingling a cappella rendition of “Silent Night,” as well as the chart-topping single, “Messiah,” along with fun favorites like a remastered version of “Marshmallow World.”

Matt Nathanson - farewell december

California cutie, and platinum selling singer-songwriter, Matt Nathanson, released his first full Christmas LP this year also, “farewell december.” It’s a 12-track set that includes fun classics like “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer,” standards like “Blue Christmas,” and “Baby Please Come Home,” as well as unique picks such as Joni Mitchell’s “River,” all done in Nathanson’s inimitable style.

The Paper Daughters of Chinatown | October Book Club

History is a funny thing. I often find that what's left out of the lesson plan can be even more powerful than what's left in. At least it's often more interesting. Perhaps the motivation for omitting such chapters is because the topic is just too uncomfortable to be spoken of, until times and attitudes change enough to learn, accept, and grow…

My book club pick for October, The Paper Daughters of Chinatown, is a powerful historical novel based on actual events, and is such a topic; covering the dark period and practice of trafficking young Chinese women in America in the late 1800's. 

Fake documents provided a means for illegal entry into the United States, and in this example, into San Fransisco's Chinatown, where the moniker "paper daughter" originated.  Once here, the woman had no legal identity and no means of escape. 

Thankfully, even true stories have heroes as well as villains, and it's the heroes that make this book a worthy and exciting read! Like those at the Occidental Mission Home for Girls, a bright spot in a landscape of bleakness...

"Told in alternating chapters, this rich narrative follows the stories of young Donaldina Cameron who works in the home, and Mei Lien, a “paper daughter” who thinks she is coming to America for an arranged marriage but instead is sold into a life of shame and despair.

Donaldina, a real-life pioneering advocate for social justice, bravely stands up to corrupt officials and violent gangs, helping to win freedom for thousands of Chinese women. Mei Lien endures heartbreak and betrayal in her search for hope, belonging, and love. The Paper Daughters of Chinatown, is a terrific historical read, timely, and a good reminder of how valiantly women have had to fight for their freedoms and equality, especially those in already marginalized populations.

It also reinforces a message I share from my heart often; bad things happen, yes, but the good is always near, waiting to spring forth from the shadows and triumph!

Ozark Chocolate Gravy

Recently, I found myself reminiscing about my grant-aunt and her chocolate gravy.

Though I was born and raised on the Oregon coast, my mother's family were transplants from the Ozark mountains. And, what they say about taking someone out of the country, but not taking the country out of them, was certainly true in this case.

Farmers turned timber workers, their customs, pronunciations, and foods were still very much reflective of generations of southern living.  While my grandmother for some reason, never cared for (or in her dialect "keered fer”) chocolate gravy, when her sister would visit, one of the first things she'd do is whip up a batch for us kids. 

Super sweet and rich, it's not something you'll want every day, but as the temps begin to dip, this southern comfort food might be very welcome some Sunday morning.

Ingredients:

• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

• ¼ cup baker’s cocoa powder

• ¾ cup granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 1 tablespoon butter, softened

• 2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions:

1. In a medium sized saucepan, whisk together flour, cocoa, and sugar.

2. Pour milk into the mixture and whisk until well blended and smooth.

3. Cook over medium heat, until thickened (7-10 minutes); stirring frequently so that it doesn’t scorch.

4. Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla, stir vigorously until butter is melted.

5. Serve immediately over flaky biscuits, croissants, toast , or ??? your choice!

I like to put some fresh fruit out with this morning treat to help temper the melt-your-teeth sweet richness of it all! Red rip strawberries, thick orange slices, or peach wedges would all be perfect accompaniments.
