New Movie | "Christmas with The Chosen - The Messengers"

A little over a year ago I discovered “The Chosen”, the first-ever multi-season television series about the life of Christ. A FREE television show, watched all over the world by tens of millions of people.

I was so enthralled, transfixed, mesmerized, by this story of “A charismatic fisherman drowning in debt. A troubled woman wrestling with real demons. A gifted publican…” that I reached out to writer/producer/director Dallas Jenkins and begged him to spend a little time with me on my podcast series, “LOVE SOMEONE with Delilah”. And he did! We had an amazing conversation, raising him to yet greater heights in my esteem (if that was even possible!)

Now Dallas and The Chosen team are bringing us a remarkable Christmas gift, a big-screen episode entitled, Christmas with The Chosen - The Messengers.

In theaters beginning December 1 (in most by December 10), reserve your tickets and experience the birth of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Mary and Joseph. What a wonderful way to launch the Christmas season, immersing yourself in the actual reason FOR the season!

There is also an extraordinary lineup of musicians performing both new and classic Christmas songs from the set of The Chosen, including: Phil Wickham, For King & Country, Brandon Lake, Maverick City Music, Cain, Matt Maher, Bryan & Katie Torwalt, Jordan Feliz, We The Kingdom, The Bonner Family, Leanna Crawford, Dawson Hollow, and One Voice Choir.

This is the perfect opportunity to bring friends and family, including those who haven’t seen The Chosen, for a unique Christmas experience.

More information can be found HERE, including how to get group tickets, how to rent out an entire screen, and how to host a screening in your church or community.

Balsam Hill has been the leading retailer of highly realistic artificial Christmas trees and holiday décor for over a decade. I always find something wonderful to add to my 12 Stockings of Christmas!

Last year they launched their most realistic artificial tree yet, the Balsam Hill Fraser Fir, with 40 different tip variations replicating what you would find in nature. It was only after mine had been up for nearly 2 months did folks start to question how my gorgeous tree was staying so fresh looking!

In addition to everything you could possibly need to get your home into the holiday spirit; signature trees, elegant ornament sets, wreaths, swags, garlands, sprays, picks, ribbons, bows, and flickering flameless candles, they also have a multitude of timeless décor options for other seasons! When the holidays are over, be sure to check out their spring floral collection and their fall foliage and décor items.

Balsam Hill is a company that always gives back to their community, and they are very supportive of my foundation, Point Hope, for which I am eternally grateful!

This year I am adding their 12-piece French Country ornament set to my gift pile. Inspired by antique French baubles, these glass ornaments are reminiscent of the subtlety and sophistication of French design. Each piece is handcrafted from thick mercury glass and comes in a variety of finishes that add texture and contrast to your holiday decorations. They will add sparkle and an understated elegance to your tree!

Soulful songstress, Norah Jones, has created her very first holiday album ever! “I Dream of Christmas”, includes 13 tracks in all, 6 of them brand-new original pieces. What a lovely surprise this is! I had to add autographed copies to my 12 Stockings of Christmas!

I was able to sit down with Norah for a long lovely chat that you can listen to on my podcast, LOVE SOMEONE with Delilah. We both profess our love for Christmas music all year long, and we talk about our favorites from the album. “Christmas Calling” was the single released ahead of the album and Norah confesses that of all the new music, she has a particular fondness for this one. I have my own favorite - you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out which it is. (But let me say, I see MANY dedications in it’s future!)

While the album is imbued with the mellow, melancholy sound of Norah, it’s also warm, welcoming, and brimming with belief in all that is good and hopeful. The best news? It’s available RIGHT NOW!

Dream a little dream with Norah. It’s a must have for every music person on your list.

My 12 Stockings of Christmas Sweepstakes is about sharing wonderful discoveries. One this year is Fishpatrick’s, fresh, flavorful albacore tuna from my hometown on the Oregon Coast! Each of my gift packs will include a sampling of their 4 fabulous flavors!

“Fishpatrick” has been a fisherman and respected business owner for over 20 years. He and his family are known for providing great customer service and for their product’s top-quality flavor and freshness! Fishpatrick’s canned albacore is a specialty gourmet food that you and your family are going to love as much as me and mine!

They offer 4 canned albacore products. Salt Free, Sea Salt Added, Garlic Jalapeño, and Smoked. Salt Free is simply a nice chunk of albacore in the can, (no water or oil is ever added to any of their BPA-free cans.) Sea Salt Added has a small pinch for a hint of additional flavor. Garlic Jalapeño is very mild with a dash of sea salt, granulated garlic, and fresh jalapeño. And the Smoked is marinated with kosher salt, brown sugar and spices, then lightly kippered with kiln dried alder.

It all comes directly from the fisherman to you for the best price and the best quality. Purchase a gift pack, or buy it by the case to enjoy all year long. (Make sure to share with appreciative family and friends!)

FISHPATRICK’S

I love tea and the calm, soothing feeling that comes with every sip, so I’m welcoming Bigelow Tea back into my 12 Stockings of Christmas gift package with a generous sampling of their wonderful brews!

I’m sure you know Bigelow from their signature blend, “Constant Comment”, the original recipe that started it all. To this day it’s blended only by someone with the Bigelow last name and remains a closely guarded family secret. Cindi Bigelow, third generation President and CEO, joined me recently on my podcast series, and shared the fascinating Bigelow story - Listen In!

Bigelow has expanded far beyond their original recipe and now produces an abundance of flavorful blends. Their Bigelow Benefits is a wonderful line of teas that support everyday wellness, body and mind. Benefits features blends like Lemon & Echinacea, supporting the immune system, and Lavender & Chamomile, to help with sleep. With many delicious flavors, Benefits uplift, relax, and help reduce stress. There’s a perfect cup for any time of day.

Staying hydrated this holiday season is important too! Try the new Bigelow Botanicals Cold Water Infusion, it’s a new way to love your water. Flavors like Watermelon Cucumber Mint infuse in cold water, for a simple and refreshing way to achieve daily hydration. Zero calories. No artificial anything.

I could go on and on; I think Bigelow has a tea for everything!

BIGELOW TEAS

My 12 Stockings of Christmas just aren’t complete until I’ve added my favorite candy, Almond ROCA, the sweetest gift of all! Almond ROCA is the Christmas candy of my youth, and I believe every Christmas stocking should include some of those classic gold-foil-wrapped pieces - so I’ll be sure to add more than a few to the 12 I’m giving away!

Every batch is made with rich creamy butter, California almonds, and the best quality chocolate! The ROCA selection is large! Almond, Cashew, Dark Chocolate, Sea Salt Caramel, Peppermint, and Mocha - They’ve even added Extra Dark ROCA, to their list of sweet treats.

I love giving and getting Brown & Haley confections the whole year through. Everyone should try the new ROCA bites that come in several delectable flavors. They’re just the right size to slip into those holiday stockings that have been hung by the chimney with care. (And to carry with you for some self-indulgence while out running holiday errands.)

Brighten someone’s day with the gift of Almond ROCA. Visit them online or find them at all your local retailers.

Pumpkin Cheesecake

Mmmmm. I haven’t made my annual skating in Central Park trip to New York now for a few years. I miss seeing all my East Coast friends, I miss the city that never sleeps, Broadway performances, window displays, and boy, oh boy, do I miss Junior’s sandwiches and cheesecakes!!!

This little number showed up on a holiday table recently and alllllmost scratched my cheesecake itch. (The flavor was there, just not the jostling crowds, noises, and endless energy found in the Junior’s dining room!)

It’s your basic graham cracker crust cheesecake recipe, all dressed up in fall finery with the addition of 15oz of pumpkin and her spicy companions we just can’t seem to live without.

Wow your family and your guests, or simply indulge yourself with this decadent little treat.

Ingredients:

Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 Tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Filling:

  • 3 (8oz) packages cream cheese, softened

  • 1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar

  • 15oz canned pumpkin

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1/4 cup sour cream

  • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat Oven to 350˚F.

Crust:

1. Use a food processor to pulse graham crackers to create fine crumbs .

2. In a medium bowl, mix together graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Dump into a 9” springform cheesecake pan and use a cup, glass, or large spoon to press the mixture down covering the bottom of your cake pan and pushing 1/3-1/2 of the way up the sides.

3. Bake at 350˚F for 8-10 minutes. Allow to cool before adding cheesecake filling.

Filling:

  1. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and brown sugar on smooth (no lumps, bumps, or chunks!).

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together pumpkin, eggs, sour cream, pumpkin pie spice, salt and vanilla extract. Add this well-combined mixture to the cheesecake filling and continue mixing on low speed just until uniform in color and consistency.

  3. Pour filling into pre-baked crust, place in oven on middle rack, and bake at 350˚F for 1 hour. Turn off heat, prop the oven door open slightly, and allow to cool for 1 hour. *

  4. Remove from the oven and allow to cool a bit longer, until the cheesecake reaches room temperature. Then cover and refrigerated at least 4 hours or overnight.

  5. Just before serving, remove from its springform pan (run a knife along the sides, then release the spring and remove the rim.)

  6. Serve with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cinnamon or pumpkin spice mix.

*Note - If you are comfortable doing so, use the water-bath method to bake. Cheesecakes love moist environments and this will help to prevent the top from cracking and the center from falling. (If you’re NOT all that comfortable with water-baths, skip it!)

The Last Checkmate | November Book Club

The Last Checkmate

Fan of The Queen’s Gambit? Then you won’t want to miss my November Book Club selection, “The Last Checkmate,” by Gabriella Saab!

I loved the Netflix series, even though I know little about the game. Just as I thoroughly enjoyed this month’s pick, another spellbinding piece of historical fiction set during WWII.

A young Polish resistance worker, Maria Florkowska, is a political prisoner at Auschwitz who plays chess in exchange for her life.

After being captured by the Gestapo in Nazi-occupied Poland, Maria and her family are sentenced to death…but when a cruel concentration camp deputy realizes her ability to play chess, she is spared. He intends to use Maria as an opponent to entertain the camp guards, with the intention of eliminating her when he tires of exploiting her chess skills.

She endures her 4-year imprisonment by strategizing not only her chess moves, but also by making her captor a playing piece in her larger game of survival, healing, and revenge. As the war nears its end, she challenges her nemesis to one final game, certain to end in life or death, in failure or justice.

“When Ebner returned to stand across from me, he held a whip in one hand and a club in the other. He placed both on the table. One reminded me of my last Gestapo interrogation, the other of my flogging, but I wasn’t afraid of either, because I remembered this this stage of his interrogations. He wasn’t going to torture me, because I was already cooperating. He just wanted to terrorize me.

We’d reached the most critical moment of our game. We’d made our opening moves and had established control of the board, strategizing and planning. Now we attacked.”

Gabriella Saab reveals herself to be a brilliant writer in her debut novel. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be up late into the night, too riveted to put down “The Last Checkmate”, until Maria has made her final move.

Christmas Music Musts!

One of the most exciting things about this time of year is the great selection of new holiday music releases!

We “flip the switch” on the Delilah radio program to all-Christmas programming earlier than most because I love the magical mood that Christmas music creates!

It’s the infusion of new music each year that makes our programming a fresh and welcome sound coming over the airwaves and spilling into your cars, your offices, and your homes, becoming a soundtrack to the memories you’re creating with co-workers, friends, and family.

And this year there are several albums full of fabulous additions to my playlist! I like to call them my “Christmas Music MUSTS,” that I just can’t wait to tell you about!

Kelly Clarkson is the first artist ever to top each of Billboard’s pop, adult contemporary, country, and dance charts. And there's a sampling of each of those genre's in her new album, “When Christmas Comes Around.

The fun single"Christmas Isn't Canceled (Just You)"  is an empowering anthem to all those who refuse to give in to remorse or regret after a breakup, but instead look toward the future with hope and happiness in their heart (even if their stockings are empty on Christmas Day!)

"We are probably all in very different places emotionally ‘when Christmas comes around.’ Some consumed with a new love, some reminded of loss, some with optimism, others for much deserved time away from the chaos our work lives can sometimes bring us. I wanted everyone to be able to connect to a message on this album. While change can be unpredictable there is no better time of year to breathe hope into one’s life and let possibility wander.” ~ Kelly Clarkson

If you haven't downloaded it yet, you shouldn’t wait a second longer!
Find it here: When Christmas Comes Around

Rob Thomas has given yourself and someone like you (see what I did there?) a fun little gift this year, his first-ever Christmas album, Something About Christmas Time.”

Rob put a lot of thought into this 10-track compilation. It is a beautiful mix of new, like “Small Town Christmas” inspired by the picturesque community he and his wife live in north of New York City, old, with covers of Bryan Adams and Ray Charles recordings, as well as some lovely collaborations with friends; pop sensation, Ingrid Michaelson, gospel star, Bebe Winans, and country legend, Brad Paisley.

As the host of a dedication show, I appreciate that not every track is what you’d call “happy.” Christmas brings about the full range of emotions, and Rob’s new album speaks to them all. You can listen to Rob and I chatting about “Something About Christmas” and all kinds of other random topics on an upcoming December podcast episode!

The album dropped in October, and is available wherever you get your music!
Here's a link to help you on your way: Something About Christmas Time

Know who else is supplying a whole new album’s worth of holiday happiness? Pentatonix! With the release of their 6th holiday themed album, “Evergreen”.

The beloved a cappella quintet has become practically synonymous with Christmas on the Delilah radio show, and I can’t wait to add their new tracks to my merry musical mix! “The Prayer” nearly brought me to my knees, as it will you, and "It’s Been a Long, Long Time", seems long, long overdue. (Yes, it’s THAT good!) The deluxe album contains a whopping 14 new tracks that we’ll all be playing on repeat!

4 of the 5 members joined me on my podcast LOVE SOMEONE with Delilah earlier this year. It was an incredible opportunity to get to know these amazing individuals whose blended voices give us the gift of the unique Pentatonix sound - so be sure to listen in.

Get your copy and several more to share here: Evergreen
(And take the opportunity to watch the video for “The Prayer”!)

“Behold.” The name along conjures great joy and anticipation, and everything on this rich album by Lauren Daigle meets those expectations.

Lauren and I were able to sit down and chat recently and we had the greatest conversation about life, faith, growth, and MUSIC. (Listen HERE) She infuses each song she performs with her love for the Lord and that unbridled joy is passed on to us as we listen.

“Behold” is a collection of 13 tracks that remind us of the reason for the season. You’ll want to pay close attention to the powerful “Light of the World”, her fun and jazzy version of “Jingle Bells”, and her unique rendition of “What Child is This”.

Treat yourself and fill a few stockings with Behold
Then spend a moment watching the album trailer & the “Jingle Bells” video.

I love to kick off my Christmas play list with “Everyday Is Christmas,” from the oh-so-talented SIA!

It’s a fun, whimsical album, chock-full of original music like the mega-hit “Snowman” which has over 500 million streams! This year “Everyday is Christmas” is being produces as a deluxe edition with 3 new bonus tracks including the fresh “Santa Visits Everyone ,“ a fun new “Snowman” remix, and a cover of Perry Como's "Round & Round".

If I had it my way, everyday would be Christmas.

We fell in love with all that is Darren Criss (multitalented musician, songwriter, stage & screen actor) through his various roles in Glee, Versace: American Crime Story, Hollywood, and others… and yet I’ve just found a whole new reason to sing his praises; his first full length album, “A Very Darren Crissmas.”

It features original songs, creative re-imaginings of classic tunes, and rarely covered hidden gems - plus guest appearances by Adam Lambert, Evan Rachel Wood and Lainey Wilson! It’s a remarkable collection of tracks curated with the dual purpose of connection - those with personal significance - and consideration - those that make you think twice.

Whatever his process, he had me at “I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas,” a looooong time favorite since way back when my children (who now have children) were small.

Having a merry little Christmas is all but guaranteed
when you get your copy of A Very Darren Crissmas

Farewell December” is a full LP of festive favorites released by singer-songwriter, Matt Nathanson.

It’s a 12-track set that delivers the homey blend of rock, folk, and pop the guy who brought us the platinum single, “Come On Get Higher” is known for. Matt has a unique way of connecting with his audiences when performing live, and the same authenticity is felt through his recordings.

I want to be the one he’s singing “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” to, and when I get there, I hope he serenades me with his cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River.” He also takes on “Blue Christmas” , “I Believe in Father Christmas”, and “Little Drummer Boy” featuring Donovan Woods, and several others that will get you into the spirit!

After downloading this LP, you won’t want to say Farewell December

On Friday, November 5, superstar, award-winning artists, Mariah Carey, Khalid and Kirk Franklin, debuted their new single, “Fall in Love at Christmas”!

The R&B and Gospel infused ballad, promising to be a new holiday classic, arrives just in time for the season. and is streaming on all digital platforms. The three artists also premiered the video for “Fall in Love at Christmas”; filmed at Carey’s home and the Butterfly Lounge in LA, and featuring her twins, Monroe and Moroccan, evoking the warm and loving spirit of the holidays.

Mariah will continue celebrating the season with a new holiday event on Apple TV+ in December, featuring the first and only exclusive performance of “Fall in Love at Christmas” with Carey, Khalid and Franklin.

There may be no new romance for me, but I know I’ll still
“Fall in Love at Christmas”

There’s no such thing as “enough” Christmas music! I get so giddy each autumn as new holiday albums and singles start falling like snowflakes… each one unique and magical, becoming part of a larger chorus of praise and celebration.

These are some of the best and you’ll want to get them before you set out to capture the perfect Christmas tree or take your first sip of eggnog!

Carrot Slaw

Putting dinner on the table during the darker months of the year always seems to be a rushed endeavor.

In the summer months when the sun is high well into the evening, and everyone is outside playing, I can move about the kitchen freely and holler for my family to come in when I’m ready for them. But now, it’s dark so soon after the kids get home from school that they are inside (often at the kitchen table doing their homework,) when it’s time to prepare the evening meal. The older ones often have things they need to hurry off to as soon as dinner is over and the younger ones need baths and bedtime routines. Can anyone relate?

I’ve got a few hacks to get a balanced meal on the table in a jiffy, and one of them is my mom’s carrot slaw.

Ingredients:

  • 3 large carrots, peeled and grated (about 3 cups)

  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

  • 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries (craisins)

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 Tablespoon sugar

  • (optional) chopped walnuts, pecans, or sunflower seeds

Directions:

  1. Peel and grate carrots,

  2. Place in large bowl and toss with vinegar.

  3. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.

  4. Serve immediately or refrigerate.

This comes together in a jiffy with ingredients most of us have on hand. It’s colorful and textural, a few things kids always seem to like, and it’s tasty!

Toss it together for a perfect pairing to roast beef or a roasted chicken, pork chops or round steak. (My folks used to tell me eating carrots would help me see in the dark… maybe that will help entice a little that is hesitant to try new foods.)

Enjoy!

IMG_2689.jpeg

The season of pumpkin spice EVERYTHING is upon us!

It’s a season I love, not just for it’s spice blend, but that certainly makes it all the sweeter! The fall harvest is in, and there are a pile of sugar pumpkins begging to be make into treats: pies, loaves, muffins, bars, cookies, and so much more! And what do they all call for? Pumpkin spice!

If you buy the mixture from your grocery store it can be pretty spendy. So I like to mix up a big batch from the mix of individual spices I alread have in my pantry, its far more economical and oh so handy to have it at the ready whenever I have a hankering.

Divided into smaller portions, it also makes a great gift for friends and neighbors, perhaps accompanying a batch pumpkin treats!

Here’s what you’ll need to mix up a batch (of about 10 Tablespoons):

Ingredients:

  • 6 Tbsp. ground cinnamon

  • 4 tsp. ground ginger

  • 4 tsp. ground nutmeg

  • 3 tsp.ground allspice

  • 3 tsp. ground cloves

Directions:

  1. Mix to blend thoroughly

  2. Store in airtight container(s)

The Stolen Lady | October Book Club

thumbnail_IMG_2770.jpg

For no particular reason, I’ve been drawn to stories that take place during the World War II era. I’ve always loved historical fiction, and there are quite a number of really good books available right now that are set during this period.

It was a time when the world hung by a thread and families nervously crowded around the wireless longing to hear news of victory. And it was a time when villains seemed easy to identify and heroes were plentiful too. A time of good and evil, victory and defeat, hope and despair… suspenseful and full of intrigue. Ok, maybe there IS a particular reason I’ve been drawn to this era - it so easily lends itself to rich and immersive reading material. I can’t seem to get enough!

Like this month’s pick. “The Stolen Lady” , by Laura Morelli, a stunning historical novel about two women, separated by five hundred years, united by their roles in hiding Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Anne Guichard is a young archivist working at the Louvre in 1939, the dawn of WWII. Her daily life is thrown into upheaval as the Nazis draw near and a mad scramble to hide the museum’s precious artwork - including the Mona Lisa - begins. Her job in art preservation is now cloaked in fear and danger.

Bellina Sardi is a servant girl in a much earlier time. The year is 1479, and her mistress, Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a wealthy silk merchant, is to have her portrait painted by Master Leonardo da Vinci. This too was a period of extreme unrest, when the Florentines were rising up to overthrow the Medici family and their wealthy beneficiaries. Bellina becomes guardian to a dangerous and valuable secret.

“When art and war collide, Leonardo da Vinci, his beautiful subject Lisa, and the portrait find themselves in the crosshairs of history. “

Fans of historical fiction will love this! Those who appreciate art will love this! Anyone who has visited France, Paris, or the Louvre will love this! WWII buffs will love this! I can’t think of anyone who won’t love this!

Laura Morelli is a masterful storyteller and imbues her characters with optimism and hope despite the dangerous games of cat and mouse they are intricately immersed in. I found myself in a time machine bouncing between centuries and fearfully protective of The Stolen Lady.

New Movies You'll Fall For!

Family, faith, and fistfuls of popcorn is going to be just ticket this fall! Get in on the good stuff when you cozy up to watch one - or all three - of these fabulous new movies coming your way!

Show Me The Father

thumbnail_ShowMeTheFather-Profile.png

The Kendrick brothers are the team that brought us War Room, Courageous, and Fireproof, and now they've created an amazing documentary about fatherhood, featuring five true father stories, all from totally different perspectives.

Show Me The Father deals with the universal issues of fatherhood. Whether your earthly father was someone to look up to and admire, someone to run from and fear, someone you never really knew emotionally, or never even met... your unique father story has a profound effect on the way you view the world and often the direction that your life takes.

This dynamic documentary involves Alex Kendrick, Stephen Kendrick, Deland McCullough, Jim Daly, Eddie George, Jill Kendrick, Jonathan Evans and Tony Evans.

Show Me The Father provides a fresh perspective on the roles of fathers in today's society. It will help you to see that your earthly father story can be redeemed for good, and you will come away empowered and inspired.

COURAGEOUS Legacy

courageous.jpeg

As a mother of a police officer, who is also an incredible father of four, this film truly touched my heart.

This is a 10th Anniversary re-release of the Kendrick Brother’s film, COURAGEOUS Legacy, and is another must-see. Celebrating 10 years of impact on families and fathers, the updated version of the film includes new scenes and an enhanced look and sound.

“Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, they are confident and focused. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. When tragedy hits home, they are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God ... and to their children?”

I laughed, cried, and cheered these guys along as they struggled to find their footing - not on the force, which they seemed to have well in-hand, but in their role as fathers, one of the most courageous positions to find oneself in. I know you’ll be right there with me when you visit theaters this September.

The Jesus Music

TJM.jpeg

Contemporary Christian Music is as mainstream and available now as any other genre, but that is a fairly new phenomenon.

The Jesus Music, a dynamic documentary, unfolds the whole story, from it’s humble beginnings at the Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California, and up through it’s many fits and starts, to become today what is recognized and celebrated as a multi-billion-dollar industry.

The film features some of my favorite artists, and people! Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Toby Mac, Lauren Daigle, Bart Millard, Joel Smallbone… and so many others who have dedicated their lives and their art to making music that unites people and honors God.

As Amy says, “A lot of hymns are close your eyes, singing to God. I wanted to sing with my eyes wide open, singing to each other.”

From the creators of I Can Only Imagine, comes The Jesus Music! If you love music (and who doesn’t?), you’ll love this magnificent musical film!

Music Notes | Lauren Daigle & ABBA

Screen Shot 2021-09-08 at 1.30.13 PM.png

There’s a couple of music notes that I’m super excited to share with you this month!

A new inspirational single, “Hold On To Me", from Lauren Daigle, and an entire album we’ve been waiting almost 40 years for - “Voyage” from Swedish pop stars, ABBA!

Both have me excited for entirely different reasons. The first is from a young, fresh artist that provides inspiration for today, and gives me hope for our future. The second is from a well-seasoned much-beloved quartet that created much of the soundtrack of my youth. Their unique sound floods me with memories while their new music reminds me there’s no better time than RIGHT NOW to be doing what we love to do.

I’m so happy that both Lauren and ABBA love making music that makes people feel good!

LD.jpeg

The enchanting Ms. Lauren Daigle has an inspirational new single out, "Hold On To Me". It is, like all of Lauren's work, beautiful, powerful, and illuminating - just what we need to hear when we find ourselves in a dark place.

HOTM3.png

Each room within the official video is connected to different causes that the charitable organization she founded, The Price Fund, has partnered with and will be raising funds for.

"This song is about the person who feels lonely, the person who feels defeated ... It's a song to remind people that hope is around."

I had the delightful experience of chatting with Lauren recently on my podcast, LOVE SOMEONE. If you love Lauren's music, you are in for a big big treat with this episode, where she shares her life and her heart with us! Listen HERE.

abba-avatars-press-2021-696x442.jpeg

Here’s some great news almost 40 years in the making! ABBA, the beloved group that sold over 400 million records and had 20 top hits on Billboard (like “Mama Mia", “Dancing Queen”, & “S.O.S.” ) is back with a brand new album, “Voyager”.

VOYAGE.jpeg

They recently surprised millions of fans with the release of two new songs, “I Still Have Faith In You”, and “Don’t Shut Me Down”, both of which are available right now… And then they shocked us all with the news of an entirely new album, “Voyage”!

“Voyage,” the Swedish group’s ninth studio album, contains 10 tracks in all. It is set to release on November 5th and is available for pre-order now!!!

Knowing me, knowing you (a-ha) there is nothing we can do… but join Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Fridpre on the out-of-this-world “Voyage” they’re about to embark upon!

The Slow March Of Light | September Book Club

BUY LINK

I love books and reading for two main reasons, for the things I can learn, and the places (my imagination) can go! It’s works like my September Book Club choice that check both boxes!

The Slow March of Light, by Heather Moore, is an historical novel, based on a true story and inspired by actual events.

I was a toddler, living worlds away, when a wall of barbed wire was erected in the middle of the night, dividing one of the largest European cities, Berlin, into two very different countries; Soviet-occupied East Berlin, under communist rule, and West Berlin. Too young, and too far removed to wonder what that must be like.

But now, now I find myself lost in “what ifs.” What if I was a toddler living on one side of that wall? What if part of my family were on the other side of the wall? What if I was older? Would I risk my life and those that I love to do try and change our circumstances? What would that be? (“Of course,” my imagination says, “of course you would!”) But we all know imagination and reality are two entirely different things…

SlowMarch.jpg

In our novel, Luisa Voigt doesn’t have to imagine a thing. It’s all too real for her. After the barbed wire goes up, her grandmother is trapped inside isolated East Germany; Luisa joins a secret spy network, whose mission is to smuggle those on the other side into West Berlin.

Bob Inama doesn’t either. A United States GI stationed in West Germany, he receives classified orders that place him on the other side secretly gathering intel to map out military targets. And then he is captured, imprisoned, and tortured. Thoughts of the lovely woman, Luisa, whom he met before his clandestine assignment, provide the glimmer of hope he needs to make it through each day of his confinement.

Told in alternating chapters, Luisa and Bob become endeared to me (and will to you!) and I drift away with them, vividly imagining myself in their situations trying to decide what to do next, and living through the drama of their stories.

Author Heather B. Moore has written a story that pulls you in, and like Bob’s imprisonment, doesn’t let you go until you’ve turned the very last page.

Back-to-School Blackberry Scones

Screen Shot 2021-08-31 at 1.07.25 PM.png

For most of the country, school is going to be back in session - IN PERSON - at least as we begin this new school year. I don’t know about yours, but MY kids are ecstatic!

Gone are the moans and groans I’ve grown used to over the nearly 40 years I’ve been at this motherhood thing, and in their place is such joy and enthusiasm over in-classroom learning I’ve never seen before! It’s got me excited too! (Yes, I DO realize the learning aspect has little to do with the anticipatory glee - it’s all about seeing friends again!!)

If you still have some plump juicy blackberries hanging around begging to be picked before the falls rains set in (Oh please, oh please, we NEED the fall rains!) all you need is a cup of them to mix up a batch of these scones and make your kids first school morning even sweeter than they could have imagined! If you go the extra step and add the lemon glaze, you’ll be so glad you did! It adds a touch of sweetness and the citrus is a nice crisp contrast to the soft warm sconce.

There are two main points to remember when it comes to making scones - one, it’s ALL ABOUT THE BUTTER. The colder, the better! And, don’t over-work the dough; give it a light touch, pat gently into place before cutting into wedges.

Give ‘em a try!

Blackberry Scones with Lemon Glaze

Ingredients:

Screen Shot 2021-08-31 at 1.04.53 PM.png
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2/3 cup sugar

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup butter, cold and cut into cubes or you can use frozen butter and grate it in.

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream

  • 1 cup blackberries

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • zest and juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1 Tablespoon of each)

  • splash of cream

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Whisk the dry ingredients together in a large bowl: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Next, add the cold butter. A pastry cutter works great if you’ve used cold butter cut into cubes. If you’ve grated in frozen butter, just toss it to coat well. (All butter should be no larger that pea-sized.)

  4. In another bowl, whisk egg and cream together. Combine with dry mixture, and mix with a fork, just enough until dough comes together.

  5. Add the berries to the dough, gently turning into the dough, trying not to squish too much juice out of the berry.

  6. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a round shape about 1” thick. Using a sharp knife dredged in flour, cut the round into about 8 wedges of the same size.

  7. Transfer to a a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown on top.

  8. Serve warm or continue with the next step to add a lemon glaze.

  9. While the scones are baking, make the glaze. Mix 1 cup powdered sugar with the zest and the juice of 1/2 a lemon. Add a splash of cream if glaze is not thin enough. (Conversely, add more powdered sugar if you want a thicker glaze.)

  10. Brush warm scones with half the glaze, wait until they have cooled a little bit (10-15 minutes) and brush again. Serve.

The Merchant and The Rogue | August Book Club

thumbnail_Facetune.jpg

The Merchant & The Rogue

I’m about 30 pages into my August Book Club choice, The Merchant and The Rogue, by Sarah M. Eden, and it’s soooo good! (The book isn’t available until the 17th, but the publishers sent me a copy early!)

This is another one of the Proper Romance books I’m so fond of. I’ve shared a few of them with you before, if you’ll remember, Miracle Creek Christmas, Promised, Lakeshire Park

The Merchant and The Rogue, has the same sensibilities; historical detail (1865 London), intriguing plot line, fascinating characters, and nothing so risqué that you’d mind your teenager picking up and reading it themselves - in fact, you’d recommend they do so!

The Merchant and the Rogue.jpeg

This is the story of Vera Sorokina, someone who loves reading the Penny Dreadfuls and all the adventure, mystery, and romance they contain, while her own life is relatively mundane working alongside her father in his book and print shop.

And it’s about Brogan Donnelly, an Irishman living in London, who coincidentally is a Penny Dreadful writer. He has a satisfactory life, yet still feels a bit lonely and much like an outsider.

It has all the right elements of a perfect romance - attraction, distrust, confusion, and a common threat this duo must work together to defeat, overcoming obstacles in their pathway to love in the process.

You might be asking how in the world I find time to read between my never-ending art installation, gardening, wrangling kids and grandkids, and radio work… but the answer is this, I ALWAYS find time to read! It is not so much one of life’s pleasures, as it is one of life’s necessities to me.

Losing myself in the pages of a good book - even if it’s just for 30 minutes or so a day, helps me to relax, unwind, and refresh. The Merchant and The Rogue does the job exceptionally well!

Oodles and Oodles of Zoodles!

Screen Shot 2021-07-15 at 10.21.27 AM.png

Zucchini growers know this truth, there are always waaaaaay too many zukes.

Most of us end up resorting to a sort of “ding dong ditch” with our over-abundant harvest - we hang bags of them on neighbors doorknobs and fence posts, place them on car hoods, and we put them in mailboxes; anywhere we know you’ll find them and hopefully EAT them! They are gladly given “gifts” from the garden (and relief from the constant worry of “what do we DO with them all????”)

Fellow produce producers, I’m here to help. When you’ve baked your last zucchini loaf, broiled your last zucchini spear, fried your last zucchini medalian, zoodles is the answer to all your, “what do I do with them now?!” zucchini questions.

There are many different “zoodle” makers out there and prices vary, but most are under $20 and come with a variety of attachments that can be used with other veggies too. Find them at any store that sells kitchen goods (Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Fred Meyer’s, etc.) I love mine, and the kids get a kick out of turning the little crank handle and watching it spit out long twisting threads of zucchini noodles.

We quick fry them in hot oil and either eat them as a side dish, or sometimes I’ll add shrimp, chicken, or pork and it becomes a meal-in-one. It’s got none of the carbs traditional noodles have, and loads more nutrients and fiber, so I feel pretty good about eating them along side a thick slice of homemade sourdough bread. (How’s that for rationalizing bad behavior?)

The best part is, we can go through pounds and pounds of our prolific little problem and save our bewildered neighbors the consternation of what THEY are going to do with the dozens of donations they’re finding on their doorstep daily!

Here’s a quick recipe if you’d like to try it out:

Ingredients:

  • Oodles of zoodles

  • Enough oil to coat the bottom of a fry pan - I’ve been using avocado oil, but you can use olive, coconut, or sesame oil - whichever you prefer.

  • Your favorite seasonings; salt, pepper, garlic, or any ethnic blend. (I like to pair Tex-Mex with shrimp, Italian for chicken, and Asian with pork.)

Directions:

  1. Heat oil in a fry pan large enough to hold your portion of zoodles * Note - the zoodles will reduce in size by about 1/2, you may want to work in batches for a large serving.

  2. Gently drop zoodles in hot oil, so that you hear a definite “sizzle”, allow to brown/caramelize before turning - approximately 2-3 minutes.

  3. Season with your favorite mixture. It can be as simple as salt and pepper, or you may decide to spice things up a bit with garlic, cayenne pepper, or an Italian, Mexican, or Asian blend.

  4. Turn gently once or twice, until zoodles have become translucent and are cooked through - less than 5 minutes.

  5. Serve as a side or add grilled shrimp, chicken, or pork for a satisfying all-in-one main.

Your zoodles, your way. Oodles of ‘em! I hope you enjoy!

"Living Brave," A Book We All Need

Screen Shot 2021-07-02 at 8.01.06 AM.png

Living Brave

Life throws us many curve balls. Why some of us have to duck, dodge, and deal with far more than others is a mystery. How does one stay hopeful? Resilient? Happy, even?

Shannon Dingle, writer and disability advocate, helps us to understand in her new book, “Living Brave.”

She knows a thing or two about survival in times of trauma and upheaval, and has learned how to embrace the preciousness of life amid it all.

After surviving sexual abuse and trafficking as a child, Shannon was left with lasting disabilities. And yet she rose. She blossomed. She thrived. She married and became a mom - six times over. Life was good. And then it wasn’t. A rogue wave hit her husband while their family was on vacation tragically ending his life, leaving her a widowed mother of 6, deep in grief.

“The grief of the aftermath of losing her love and life partner sits at the heart of Living Brave, where Shannon’s searing, raw prose, illustrates what it looks like to take brave steps on the other side of unimaginable loss.

Through each challenge, she reveals the ways she learned to walk through them to the other side, and find courage even through the darkest moments. Living Brave gives women permission to wrestle with difficult topics, to use their voice, to take a stand for justice, to honor the wisdom of their bodies, and to enact change from a place of strong faith.”

This is a book anyone who has ever wondered “How do I get through this?” needs. Which means it’s a book we ALL need. To live, it is said, is to love. It is also to experience loss and pain. For some, like Shannon, there are other elements, abuse, trauma, and disability.

Let her invite you into her life and share her experiences with you, so that you might find some insight and inspiration on how to deal with whatever curve ball life has thrown at you and remain hopeful still.

Here’s where you can get your copy of LIVING BRAVE.

Sisters Of The Resistance & Island Queen | July Book Club

Facetune_16-06-2021-10-59-22.JPG

I don’t know if it stems from our “year of restrictions” or if there are just too many good new releases, but the last couple of months I’ve found it impossible to limit my book club selection to a single title!

Sisters Of The Resistance,” by Christine Wells, and “Island Queen,” by Vanessa Riley, are the two I’ve chosen to share with you during the month of July!

Sisters Of The Resistance

Here’s an incredible story, inspired by real-life people, places, and happenings. “Sisters of the Resistance” by Christine Wells, tells of the bravery of Catherine Dior, sister of the fashion designer, Christian Dior, whose label we all covet to this day, and her heroic movements near the end of WWII in occupied France.

“Paris, 1944: The war is nearly over, but for members of the Resistance in occupied France, it is more dangerous than ever before. Twenty-five-year-old Gabby Foucher loathes the Nazis, though as the concierge of 10 rue Royale, she does her best to avoid conflict—unlike her bolder sister Yvette, who finds trouble at every turn.

Then they are both recruited into the Resistance by Catherine Dior and swept into a treacherous world of spies, fugitives, and intrigue. While Gabby risks everything for the man she is hiding from the Nazis, Yvette must decide whether to trust an enigmatic diplomat who seems to have guessed her secret. As the threat of betrayal draws ever-closer, one slip could mean the deaths of many, and both sisters must make choices they might regret. “

We hear so little of the remarkable women who helped to defeat Nazi forces during WWII, that I find stories such as these completely engrossing and absolutely jaw dropping.

"As dazzling as a Dior gown! With a gorgeous blend of fashion, heartbreak, heroism, and love this book will transport you to France...” —Natasha Lester, New York Times bestselling author of “The Paris Secret.”

Immerse yourself in Catherine Dior’s Paris spy network by picking up
your own copy of SISTERS of the RESISTANCE.

Island Queen

From what little I know of the colonial West Indies, a story about a woman of color who rose from slavery to become a wealthy and powerful landowner, would seem rather extraordinary. And that’s exactly what “Island Queen,” by Vanessa Riley is! Extraordinary.

In this stunning historical novel, Riley draws upon the true-life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas to weave a fascinating, page-turning adventure.

”Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, Doll bought her freedom—and that of her sister and her mother—from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent.

Island Queen is a sweeping epic of an adventurer and a survivor who answered to no one but herself as she rose to power and autonomy against all odds, defying rigid eighteenth-century morality and the oppression of women as well as people of color. It is an unforgettable portrait of a true larger-than-life woman who made her mark on history.”

I absolutely could NOT put this one down. It is rich in historical details, transporting me to a hot tropical climate in a time without air conditioning or any other modern convenience, and where survival for most was tied to incredible physical labor and discomfort. How anyone survived the circumstances baffles me, and how one woman could rise, and rise, and rise, is astonishingly inspirational!

“Richly detailed, vividly depicted, and sweeping in scope, “Island Queen” is historical fiction at its absolute finest. A stunning must-read!”—Chanel Cleeton, New York Times bestselling author of “The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba.”

Here’s where you can get it: ISLAND QUEEN

Before you head out to the lake, the beach, or the backyard, grab your sunhat, shades, a tall cool glass of iced tea, and these two great reads!

Enjoy!

Fresh Corn, Tomato, & Cucumber Salad

IMG_1383.jpeg

This colorful salad recently appeared at a family gathering.

Amongst delicious, but not the healthiest choices, (yes, I’m talking to you, bratwurst, Doritos, and potato salad!) it was a fresh, welcome addition to the early summer banquet table.

It’s easy to mix together, and you can adapt it to whatever you’ve got in the fridge.

Use the olive oil and vinegar you’ve got around. Regular, extra-virgin, rice, white wine, red wine, whatever. Try the recipe’s “secret ingredient” of Montreal Steak Seasoning (a dry mixture of salt, pepper, paprika, garlic, and who knows what) or substitute your favorite seasoning blend. Add avocado, rinsed and drained black beans, scallions if you don’t have red onion, mozzarella cheese, or feta crumbles… Add sunflower or roasted pumpkin seeds just before serving if that tickles your fancy. Your salad, your way.

Here’s the recipe for the one pictured!

Ingredients:

Facetune_16-06-2021-15-52-06.JPG
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar

  • 3 generous tablespoons McCormick’s Montreal Steak Seasoning (or salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste)

  • 2 cans of whole kernel corn, drained, or 6 ears fresh corn cooked, cooled, and cut from cob (about 4 cups)

  • 2 cups grape or cherry tomatoes, halved

  • 2 large cucumbers, peeled, and diced

  • 1 large red bell pepper, seeds removed, diced

  • 1/2 large red onion, diced

Directions:

  1. Whisk together the oil, vinegar, and seasonings in a small bowl.

  2. Combine corn, tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, and red onion in a large bowl.

  3. Pour the vinaigrette over the veggies and toss to coat.

  4. Let stand for about 10-15 minutes then give a taste test and adjust seasonings if needed, adding salt, pepper, garlic or others (Italian blend) to your likings.

  5. Serve.

Fresh, light, and healthfully delicious. Go ahead and indulge in the other picnic favorites, but leave a little room on that flimsy paper plate for some of this goodness!

Perfect for your Father’s Day, 4th of July, or any summer gathering.

Father's Day Gift-Away!

Screen Shot 2021-05-28 at 4.09.19 PM.png

Last month I put together some pretty Mother’s Day packages and gifted them away to some very deserving moms. So it only seems fair that THIS month I do something similar for a few lucky dads!

My Father’s Day Gift-Away includes some good reads, good eats, and a gift card that’s good to go (on your own little shopping excursion.)

Screen Shot 2021-05-26 at 12.35.43 PM.png

I’m including both books from my June Book Club, The Immortals and In Times of Rain and War. Both stories take place during World War II, one being non-fiction and the other an historical novel.

The first is titled, The Immortals, by Steven T. Collins. This is well-researched work of non-fiction tells the story of the four famous chaplains serving the SS Dorchester, (known as “The Immortal Chaplains”) and a previously unsung fifth hero who risked his life to save others when the ship with over 900 men on board went down in World War II.

Screen Shot 2021-05-26 at 12.38.28 PM.png

The second volume in this Father’s Day pack is a phenomenal work of historical fiction, In Times of Rain and War, by Camron Wright, author of the best-selling novel, The Rent Collector. It is a story of a German citizen trgubg trying to keep herself and her secret alive during the Blitz in London, and Lt. Wesley Bowers, an American soldier training with a London Bomb Disposal company…

It is described as “a gripping and heartbreakingly beautiful story about the strength and resilience of the human heart and spirit, reminding us there is always hope in hard times.”

You can learn more about each on my June Book Club page, HERE.

Choose which volume you’d like to read while the grill is heating up, because I’ve recently made a new discovery that I’m sharing in my gift-away package, Oshēn Salmon.

Oshēn Salmon is vibrant, DELICIOUS, and sustainably raised Atlantic salmon that has a perfect combination of healthy omega-3s (DHA & EPA). Guaranteed seven days fresher than your local retailer. No hormones or heavy metals are included so you're eating salmon and only salmon.

An insulated package of fresh Oshēn Salmon will be delivered to your door. Each box will contain two (2) packages of 2 steaks each, or 4 total servings. A special treat for a special dad!

And, if that’s not enough, I’m tucking in a $25 gift card to The Home Depot so you can buy yourself some new grilling tongs to turn your salmon - or anything else that catches your fancy!

A long-time sponsor of mine, The Home Depot has it all. Which department you spend it in is your choice, Patio, Gardening, Tools. Lumber, Paint… the options are practically limitless!

The Father’s Day Gift-Away sweepstakes
will run from
Wednesday, June 2, through Friday, June 11.

Simply write to me HERE and tell me who and why you think should receive this gift-pack of goodies. I’ll choose 5 winners at random.

Thanks dads for the important job you do. For all the love, support and guidance, YOU RULE!
